Emotions for the new age
· Delayed toast fright (the surprise that only hits after the toast has sprung up)
· Dread envy (the envy occasioned by a full, rich, or interestingly kinked head of dreaded hair in excess of or generally better than one’s own)
· Bed envy (the envy occasioned by great linens)
· Saké love (rhymes with puppy love, and would happen to you if you were to travel to Japan and get sloshed at a small restaurant so good it only seats seven people)

Untitled
Your door bangs when you are gone.
It bangs and bangs and bangs, and I wish you would ask it
What is wrong.
Your door bangs when you are gone.
It bangs and bangs and bangs, and I wish you would ask it
What is wrong.

It’s testament to my feelings for you that I’ve decided to tell you the truth. The kindest thing I could do is deceive you. – His speech to the jury, defending himself.

New From Tearoom Books: I Remain Indoors by Gary Cummiskey
I Remain Indoors is a collection of short poems by Gary Cummiskey, one of South Africa's leading alternative poets. The collection deals with ordinary moments, mundane even, but Cummiskey deftly pinpoints their vitality and fragility. The poems in I Remain Indoors are like text messages from a man a minute ahead of the rest of the city.

Insomnia steps
Waiting with coffee until the city becomes occupied,
The poem is the rat race, the fact that it exists is enough.
Form is not important, does it enjoy itself?
Awake at 1, possibilities strobe,
And someone in Michigan is just seconds away.
This is not so bad, this long night of the soul.
At 2am, a comic book bought over Loot.co.za
For a nephew after pleading, and delivered
Together with an Anais Nin (unfortunately, to the office)
Is inappropriate maybe. Should run it by my brother.
3 is a locked-up memory of the week,
And a friend linking to a website that objectifies dead people.
Men. Stalin, F. Scott Fitzgerald, nameless Union soldiers 1861
In daguerrotype. Henry Adams is described as a ‘studmuffin’.
By 5 the city is ready for small movements
It interrupts the solitude we deserve, with a crane shifting
A treetop swaying. A few blocks south
A swimming pool is waiting, to see if you will make it there, today.
