Keegin Munsamy: 0018

Epilogue

I am done with that piece of paper. All it reads is a eulogy and then at the end the birth of something. The rest is all mixed up and fragmented. I put the pen and paper back with something special. She looks at me. She is about to come back. This is not us waiting for our boat ride. This is not her telling me to go and then come back. This is her going alone. She stares back at me as she hands in her ticket. This is not a bus ride. This is not a train. All I know is that she has reading material and I am burning for her to come back.

The Last Song

I think I saved the best for last. This is that song. This is that song that gets me excited. When it plays I am right there by her.
Come here.
Closer.
These are the only two words that I utter.

Reconcile

She only utters two words.
No.
Just.

Pen to Paper

She does things differently. She gives you a picture. She places white roses on a specific day. One minute she cries. The next she is smiling then laughing. She is not a dot but feels like one. When I ask her why, she says Just.

Six White Roses

We sat in the car. For the first month I placed a white rose for him. Then I said for every month that passes I will add a white rose. We are now a month away from six. I said this month I am placing five roses. But on this day she placed them.

The Song that was Skipping

This burning mess now suddenly smells as if something has been cremated. I think we burnt something that we needed. Was it an accident? Did we just get caught up in everything? Did  we miss something? I think it was time. Whatever it was.

One of those German Philosophers

He saw us take him.
And when we returned.
He didn’t come back.

An Italian-found Name

Again it was No and then Yes. But she came and then she said she had to go. But she stayed. She saw him for the last time in this burning mess. We didn’t quite know it was going to be the last time. I knew it would eventually come upon us. And it was that day. For once I didn’t see or know where her bag was. He was gone and I forgot about it.

The Next Track

The song is skipping.

I think there is something wrong.

I take the album from her bag.

Wipe the disc.

 It still skips.

This is what you get for R50.

Butterfly Kisses

To this day I don’t know. Happy Father’s Day and daddy. How did I do this? What did I do? Then the card and that picture. She was the one in that dream of the black guitar. The second song on that bargain album is with butterflies and kisses. She comes up to me with a picture frame and a hug but in that moment I can see the guardian spirit that lingers to protect the two of them. I told her once that she was my seeing eye. As the song plays she strums the guitar and then a smile.

Although she had no memory she still wrote down roses, cars, horses, sleep, kung fu, socks, record players, dance, guitar, beach and tattoos. She came once and stood by the burning mess. We both sensed that night her bag was going to burn. This is the gift she gave me and we could not watch it burn. She held her bag tight until the track skipped to the next song.

Tighter and tighter

It was only R50.

A bargain.

I am making reference to a song.

Sleep tight for me,

Sleep tight for me,

I’m gone.

Even her signature couldn’t make me stay.

The Nail Clipper

I will be waiting in this burning mess. He is waiting for life to end. The other is waiting for a hair cut but at least something is burning. We finally managed to find a pin. Even though we were running late. Sign in blood because I do not want to wait in madness.

First Dog

The old boy needs some attention. A tablet in the morning and in the evening and special food to help him along. He missed his morning medication because no one gave him any attention. He is suffering because we were burning this mess.

Father’s Mess

Store everything. Because he may need it one day. The yard is a mess. There are things that do not belong in her bag. This is not a scrap yard. One day I will watch everything burn.

Leave it Behind

This is the second time. I remember the first. My hands are greasy. The first time it was not me but this time I was driving. There is no water around expect by the beach. It’s far too windy and the weather is changing. The tyre needs to be changed. I remember this is not the first time. She hands me the wet wipes. That’s how I know where to finds things.

Never Named

She said stay then she said Go. Come here. Never mind. We can go together. We watched the boat move across the harbour. Our turn would be next. But we were still waiting. We were going to miss our turn. But we had to go back to bring the car closer and to fetch her bag. I had asked her to take it but she had said No. Then she changed her mind. It is not the same without her bag. I felt she must let it go although she did try for a moment.

Contents

Never look in a woman’s bag.

There are white roses, an album, a nail clipper, a burnt pen and paper.

She could burn.

These things could burn.

Fragmented Adventures

Prologue

I open her bag. I know where to find things. I know exactly where the pen is and that folded piece of paper. I need it now. It’s time.
